On a quarterly basis, I will be featuring a Mama of the Month! A fearless Queen who juggles motherhood with other daily demands of life. Mothers who didn’t put their dreams on hold because they became parents… Queens who pour into their children and are their biggest supporters!
What better month than the month of February to feature our first mama… her birthday month! Our mama is the Month is none other than SHANISSE SMITH! Shanisse is a licensed independent Makeup Artist and Cosmetologist! Together, we are business partners/ Brand Ambassadors for The Queenin’ Collection 👸🏾(coming soon…😉) . She is also the mom of two stud muffins, Justin and Jarrett👬, who she affectionately calls “Joe and Larry” ❤
Let’s get to know this Modern Day Black Mama…
Keara: Give us a snapshot of your journey…
Shanisse: Well I’ve always been interested in hair and makeup. Whether it was playing with my dolls or experimenting on my cousins (We both laugh because I was often experimented on 😩😂) but I never looked at it as a career. I went through life as a normal teen-did the college thing which really wasn’t for me. I started working with kids with special needs but by this time, I had my own two little boys. I would come home depleted of all my energy and didn’t have enough strength to be the mom to them that I was being to my students. I had an “a ha” moment that a friend recently reminded me of…. I went into the treatment room to “vent” and told her I was getting out of that job to pursue my passion! In 2011 I began taking makeup classes after work and completely quit my job in 2012. I went on to complete cosmetology school in 2016 after attending 3 schools- Yes there were hurdles but I pushed through! Today my clientele is steadily increasing and I have been blessed to do hair and make up for proms, weddings, private events and more!
Keara: Our book of the month is “Jump” by Steve Harvey. I know you “jumped” before it was a thing but how has reading the book continued to inspire you?
Shanisse: This book gave me so much goosebumps while reading! It’s exactly how I felt when I discovered my passion for hair and makeup! Reading this book gave me reassurance that there is greater life AFTER the jump! You just have to take that first leap. It’s confirmed everything I believed in when it came to pursuing my dream and awakened a confidence and comfort in me knowing that I am not the only one who felt the need to jump!
Keara: Would your life be different without your kids? Do you feel you would have gotten this far or thought you would be further along?
Shanisse: My life would be 100% different- and not for the better! My boys are the air beneath my wings to push me to soar to greater heights. Because of them, I can’t give up!
Keara: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In business, motherhood etc.?
Shanisse: Well I will have teenage boys!! I hope they will be strong, well rounded, intelligent men who watched their mom become an entrepreneur! Of course my salon will be open and I have a huge passion for mentoring!
Keara: Final question, In your own words, what makes you a Modern Day Black Mama?!
Shanisse: I am a Modern Day Black Mama and I say that proud! Unlike back in the day, women became mothers and took that as a job to only take care of the house (yes they did it well) but I believe you can be an awesome mom and still pursue your dreams and that is something I hope I am instilling in my boys today
Let’s hear it for Shanisse, a Modern Day Black Mama and also wish her a Happy Birthday 🎂🎊🎉🎁🎈 2/4
